Kenya’s Rally Landscape After WRC – African Rally Championship 2025

The dust has barely settled on the thrilling stages of the WRC Safari Rally Kenya 2025, yet the silence in Kenya’s motorsport scene feels almost deafening. As the rallying heartbeat of Africa, Kenya’s deep-rooted history in the sport—dating back to the 1980s—combined with a vibrant fan base, sets the stage for what should be a dominant presence in the African Rally Championship (ARC). But is Kenya truly holding that title?

The ARC: Africa’s Gravel-Paved Passion

The FIA African Rally Championship (ARC), an all-gravel calendar set across Sub-Saharan Africa, continues to capture the continent’s rugged beauty and thrilling motorsport spirit. Since its inception in 1981, the ARC has showcased rallying through breathtaking landscapes and raw driving skill. And with Kenya’s return to the WRC calendar in 2021, the ARC has benefited from renewed energy and attention.

2024: A Year of Highs and Lows

While Kenya wowed the world with WRC-level spectacle, the ARC calendar faced setbacks. The 2024 Equator Rally, a highly anticipated event, was postponed twice due to relentless flooding. Despite attempts to reschedule, nature had other plans. Similarly, Tanzania’s rally was cancelled due to financial constraints—a sobering reminder of the sport’s logistical and financial demands.

Yet, amidst the chaos, champions rose. Karan Patel and Tauseef Khan once again proved their dominance, clinching the 2024 ARC title with an incredible 140 points. Uganda’s Michael Jr. Mukula followed in second with 47 points. A hearty “well done” is in order for the tenacity and consistency shown by these crews.

2025 ARC Calendar – A Fresh Start

The FIA World Motorsport Council has approved a new, dynamic 2025 ARC calendar, promising exciting rally action across the continent:

  1. Kenya (WRC Safari Rally) – 20–23 March
Kicking off in Naivasha, ARC competitors went head-to-head with the world’s best. Kenya’s top local names—Carl “Flash” Tundo, Jeremiah Wahome, Yassin Nasser, and Nikhil Sachania—rose to the occasion in front of packed crowds.
  1. Uganda (Pearl of Africa Rally) – 9–11 May
Known for massive crowds and energy-packed stages, Uganda never disappoints. This rally will push crews to their limits.
  2. Rwanda (Mountain Gorilla Rally) – 4–6 July
With fast-paced, scenic routes and an electric atmosphere, Rwanda has become a fan-favorite. After hosting the first African General Assembly in 2024, expectations are sky-high.
  3. Burundi (Rally Burundi) – 15–17 August
One of the newest but most passionate hosts. Burundi’s stages, fan culture, and organization have earned it a permanent place in the ARC hearts.
  4. Tanzania (ARC Grand Finale) – 19–21 September
Back on the calendar with renewed strength, Tanzania is set to close the 2025 ARC season with flair. A proud return for a determined motorsport nation.

Kenya’s Next Chapter

As Kenya continues to shine on the WRC stage, local fans and stakeholders hope to see more structure and investment in the rally space. Could we see some of our WRC2 drivers stepping up to Rally1 machines in the future? Only time will tell, but the dream is alive.

The foundation is strong, the history is rich, and the passion is unmatched. Let’s channel the momentum from WRC into nurturing our local talent and giving the ARC the platform it truly deserves.

Let the dust rise. Let Africa rally.
