Kenyan Rally Drivers Ready for the WRC Safari Experience

A Legacy of Grit and Glory

Kenya has a long and proud history of producing remarkable rally drivers, thanks to its unique position as the only African country hosting one of the toughest WRC events. The Safari Rally, originally known as the East African Coronation Rally, was first held in 1953 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. Over the years, it became one of the most grueling motorsport events, pushing drivers to their limits with rough terrains, unpredictable weather, and even wildlife encounters.

In its golden era, legendary Kenyan drivers like Shekhar Mehta (“The Safari Sheikh”) and Joginder Singh (“The Flying Sikh”) dominated the Safari Rally, leaving an unforgettable mark on the global rallying scene. This success inspired a new generation, with names like Ian Duncan (1994 Safari Rally winner), Patrick Njiru, and Carl Tundo ensuring that Kenya remained a formidable force in rallying.

The Return of the Safari Rally & Local Aspirations

After a 19-year hiatus, the Safari Rally returned to the WRC calendar in 2021, restoring Kenya’s place on the global motorsport stage. Since then, local drivers have been working hard to compete with the world’s best, proving that with the right support, Kenya could one day see a homegrown talent in the top-tier Rally1 category.

With WRC Safari Rally 2025 fast approaching, all eyes are on the Kenyan drivers who will take on the challenge this year.

Meet Kenya’s 2025 WRC Safari Rally Drivers

Rally2 Category (WRC2)

These drivers will battle it out against some of the best in the world in the second-tier WRC2 class, which is highly competitive and often a stepping stone to Rally1 opportunities.

  • Karan Patel (Škoda Fabia) – Fresh off his Africa Rally Championship (ARC) victory, Karan is eager to make an impact on home soil. Sponsored by KCB Bank Kenya, he has proven himself as one of the fastest rally drivers in Africa.
  • Carl Tundo (Ford Fiesta) – A veteran of Kenyan motorsport, Tundo brings years of experience to the competition. Expect him to use his knowledge of local terrains to push for top honors.
  • Jeremiah Wahome (Ford Fiesta) – Moving up the ranks to Rally2 in 2025, Jeremiah is one of Kenya’s rising stars. His experience in Rally3 has prepared him well for this step up.
  • Hamza Anwar (Ford Fiesta) – Another exciting talent, Hamza has consistently demonstrated determination and raw speed. Now in Rally2, he’s expected to make a big statement.
  • Aakif Virani (Škoda Fabia) – With experience in local and international events, Aakif is a strong competitor looking to showcase his skills at the highest level of African rallying.

Rally3 Category (WRC3)

This category provides young and upcoming drivers a chance to showcase their skills.

  • Nikhil Sachani – A promising driver who will be competing against rising talents from across the globe.

Kenya’s Female Rally Stars

Kenyan motorsport is also witnessing the rise of incredible women who are breaking barriers in rallying.

  • Maxine Wahome – A young sensation who made history by winning a round of the WRC3 category in 2022.
  • Sheghu & Linet Ouko – A dynamic duo making waves in the Safari Rally.
  • Caroline Gatimu & Tinashe Gatimu – Another pair proving that rallying isn’t just for the men.

The High Stakes for WRC Safari Rally 2025

With two rallies already completed in the season, Toyota Gazoo Racing is pulling ahead in the Manufacturers’ Championship, while Elfyn Evans is leading the Drivers’ Standings. But with the rough and unpredictable Kenyan terrain, could we see an upset?

Current Standings:

Manufacturers’ Championship:

  1. Toyota Gazoo Racing Team – 120 points
  2. Hyundai Shell Mobis Team – 72 points
  3. M-Sport Ford Puma Team – 25 points

Drivers’ Championship:

  1. Elfyn Evans – 61 points
  2. Sébastien Ogier – 33 points
  3. Kalle Rovanperä – 31 points

This places Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville (2024 WRC Champion) under intense pressure. Can he bounce back, or is Toyota set to reclaim the drivers’ title?

From Snow to Dust: Why Safari Rally is the Ultimate Challenge

Coming from the icy roads of Rally Sweden, the WRC drivers now shift to the dusty, rocky, and unpredictable landscapes of Kenya. Safari Rally is not just a race—it’s a battle of endurance, strategy, and adaptability.

Unlike any other WRC event, Kenya’s rally features grueling long-distance stages, deep fesh-fesh dust, river crossings, and even wildlife on the road! It’s a true test of resilience, making it one of the most anticipated rallies of the season.

Can a Kenyan Driver Dominate in 2025?

The goal is clear: To see a Kenyan driver on the WRC podium. With continued support from sponsors like KCB Bank, government backing, and passionate fans, that dream is no longer far-fetched.

For now, we wait and watch as the countdown to WRC Safari Rally Kenya 2025 begins!
