Toyota has elevated Sami Pajari to Rally 1 after his successful stint in WRC 2, making the 22-year-old the youngest driver on the team, even younger than Kalle Rovanperä, who is currently 23. The age factor seems to have played a significant role in this promotion, as Toyota aims to ensure continuity and reduce pressure on Rovanperä. With Sébastien Ogier, the most successful driver, now in his 40s, Sami’s promotion appears to be a strategic long-term project for the Toyota team.
Sami’s relationship with Toyota team principal Jari-Matti Latvala, both being countrymates, might have influenced this decision. However, Sami’s outstanding performance in WRC 2 was the primary factor. Latvala praised Sami’s great performance and expressed confidence in his rally skills.

Sami’s debut race in WRC 1 will be in Latvia next month. This infusion of young blood is expected to bring speed and continuity to the Toyota team. Sami expressed his happiness, saying, “My dream has come to pass.” This promotion marks an exciting new chapter for both Sami and Toyota, as they look to the future of rallying with renewed vigor and ambition.
