One of the founding rounds from the championship’s beginning in 1973, Italy’s WRC counter was formerly a mixed surface event based in Sanremo before it moved to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia in 2004. Adding to the challenge are the temperatures, which can exceed 30°C. It will be uncomfortable in the cars with higher-than-normal stress on engines and transmissions.

The Sardinian Showdown
From May 30th to June 2nd, 2024, the WRC circus heads to the rugged terrain of Sardinia. This is another crucial circuit for Toyota and Ford to challenge Hyundai’s dominance at the top. Toyota team principal Jari-Matti Latvala emphasizes the importance of consistency for Takamoto Katsuta, urging him to carry his strong Friday performance into the entire weekend at Rally Italia Sardegna.
Hyundai’s Cyril Abiteboul was thrilled with Dani Sordo’s impressive debut in Portugal earlier this month and is now pushing the Spaniard to show even more speed on the Sardinian stages. The Alghero-based event is one of Sordo’s favorites, with two wins and podiums in three of the last four Sardinian WRC rounds he has finished.

The Heat is On
The temperatures in Sardinia can soar above 30°C, making it uncomfortable for the drivers and placing extra stress on the cars’ engines and transmissions. This adds an extra layer of challenge to the already demanding gravel stages.
Looking Back and Looking Ahead
In 2023, Thierry Neuville led a Hyundai one-two finish with Esapekka Lappi in second. Toyota’s Kalle Rovanperä came in third, with Elfyn Evans finishing fourth. This year, Hyundai faces a tough battle to maintain its lead, with Toyota and Ford eager to dethrone them.
As we gear up for the Rally Italia Sardegna, all eyes are on the drivers and their machines. Who will conquer the scorching Sardinian stages and emerge victorious? Stay tuned for what promises to be an electrifying round of the WRC!
